Everyone has these amazing goals that we would all like to achieve. To learn a new hobby or skill, to obtain a new degree or certification, or physical goals like losing or gaining weight. Dream chasing is a part of a happy life, if you're not starving to be better day in and day out then you’re truly not living. Progressing through each of our days is measured by our variables due to our lives varying so much from person to person. The question to ask is this: While chasing your dreams, has there ever been a time when you feel it's completely unattainable? Something you've worked so hard for but still seems so far out of reach?
I’ll relate this to an analogy many of you may be familiar with: treadmill running. You’re on a treadmill, walking or running does not matter, but you’re staying in one place. Picture this: If someone holds your goal out in front of you, just out of reach while you’re on that treadmill. In the sake of not just getting off the treadmill and taking your goal from this individual, you'll seem to be moving your body but not physically closing the gap to this goal. That is one of the toughest things about making progress on your dream and I want every one who reads this (Thanks for sticking around so far :) ) to remember what I’m writing to you. Okay, here it goes:
*YOUR DREAMS CAN BE CHASED BUT THEY WILL NEVER CHASE YOU BACK*
With most things, gratification comes eventually (usually in waves of being noticed for your hard work) but when it comes to dreaming and chasing, you won't get any sort of true deep gratification for what you do until you're done. When you meet your goal 100% and have no further progress to make is when you'll be satisfied and only then should you be (it’s great to celebrate the small wins but save the big celebration for when you're done). One person who just by their actions followed this and is a huge idol to myself and many others across the world: Kobe Bryant (rest his soul). For those who don't know Kobe Bryant was a basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers. He is arguably one of the top basketball players ever, not only in his position but in the game overall. His iconic way of thinking, the “Mamba Mentality” was how he played the game of basketball and life.
During one of his many championship runs, Kobe faced the Magic in 2009. Holding a strong 2-0 lead on the seven-game series and the team looked as promising for a championship as ever and ended up winning the championship as well as finals MVP a short three games later. Kobe is interviewed after game two and upon walking to the podium, the star is seemingly unhappy. His question was simple: “Are you not happy with your team's back-to-back wins?” His answer shocked most in the room:
“What’s there to be happy about? Job’s not finished.”
This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about, do not let yourselves lose focus with small wins. Seeing progress is great, especially after maybe not seeing progress in a long time, don't let it take your train off the track. That is how we have setbacks.
Now I know what you may think: “How do you reach these dreams if they are never chasing back?” Well simple: you've got to work 10x as hard, keep your head held high day in and out, and most importantly trust your process. Trust in yourself, your schedules, and your loved ones, that these things will push you. Harder and harder each day to continue to see progress. Some days are easier than others (which can be said for a lot of different scenarios) but always remember that people are standing in your court, just like Kobe, to help and guide you on your way to success.
